DESCRIPTION/STATEMENT: When I was younger I wanted to be an archaeologist. I envisioned myself reconstructing societies based on their artifacts. Sometimes in my studio, I place myself in the role of a future, science-fiction archaeologist, with very limited information about this time in the Earth’s history. This feels like a very honest role for me to play since I admit to knowing very little about the vast operations of the natural world, and most archaeological explanations to date have been based on extremely limited (and sometimes invented) information. My resulting reconstructions are evocative of Linnaeus’s “animal, mineral, vegetable” classifications- only remixed. These pieces are produced primarily with man-made materials as I hypothesize that in the year 2011, many life forms were composed of synthetic substances.
