TITLE: In Memory of Flight
DATE: 2011
MEDIUM: hand-formed porcelain, found silver serving dish
DIMENSIONS/RUN TIME: 9 1/2″ x 5 7/8″ x 1 1/2″
DESCRIPTION/STATEMENT: In Memory of Flight is a meditation upon memory, longing, and loss, and what remains when flight – literal or metaphoric – is no longer possible. I modeled this assemblage while studying bones from the wings of birds that can no longer fly and arranged these porcelain bones as the remnants of what has decayed or been consumed. Drawn to the structural strength and fragility of wings, I ponder this question: do these birds carry within their bones the memory of flight?
