TITLE: COMPANION PORTRAITS: HOMAGE TO A GOAT
DATE: 2012
MEDIUM: BONES OF A GOAT, ACRYLIC PAINT, BEADED CLOTH
DIMENSIONS/RUN TIME: Each 4″ x 5″ x 1 3/4″
DESCRIPTION/STATEMENT: These abstract companion portraits are painted on the bones of a goat that my husband selected and brought home from Iowa to nourish our family in Wisconsin. They pay homage to the goat as ossuaries of its remains. The male is relatively natural, though covered with acrylic medium and minimal acrylic paint. The female, on the other hand, is painted entirely in white acrylic with design. Both have a minimal decorative element at bottom; Nigerian beaded fabric by Nike (of Nigeria). Very much alive in companionship, the vitality of these small portraits is an index of my memories of my early life and family of farmers, educators, musicians, artists, and military men and women in Mississippi and elsewhere, and of my love of the Midwest.
