TITLE: Ancestral Link
MEDIUM: plaster of Paris, paper, fabric, shells, beads, acrylic paint
DIMENSIONS/RUN TIME: 20″ x 3″
DESCRIPTION/STATEMENT: My work has to do with reflections; reflections of and on concepts, places, people. This piece, Ancestral Link, is about the connections we all have to Africa, the birthplace of humanity. The bone represents the genetic link we share. The beads, which are worn around the waists of many African women, symbolizing their fertility and femininity, here stand for Africa as our common Motherland. The cowrie shells, once used as currency, symbolize Africa’s past and present abundance. The mirrors, inset amongst the rich cacophony of colors, patterns and textures of Africa, reflect the image of the viewer, incorporating him/her into the piece, metaphorically affirming the oneness of us all.
